Horizontal Woman

This is an attempt to visually depict, through a series of photographs, the “invisible geography” and hard-to-describe experiences of Chronic Pain which are so eloquently described in Suzanne E. Bergers’ book “Horizontal Woman”, (Houghton Mifflin, NY, 1996). I draw, also from my personal experience living with chronic, intractable pain.

I have used dolls as subjects in my photographs; their facial expressions don’t change; they are emotionally neutral, and they can be manipulated.

My goal is to address an acute need to educate and raise awareness of the serious problem of under-treatment and mistreatment of Chronic Pain by the medical community, the American legal system and society.
